Thanks for this. There are certainly some extraordinary similarities in the information we both have. I have noticed an "S" being misread as an "A" and visca versa in the past so "Wimmers"/"Wimmera" is a fine candidate for such.

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending upon your point of view, I am away in China at the moment adding to our family by adoption. I'll be back home in a couple of weeks and will review what I have and see if there is a link.

Thanks again...

Default Samuel Wimmera Marsden

Like 'WasMarsdennowProcter', Samuel Wimmera Marsden was my great grandfather, on my mothers side.

My Grandmother was Lilian Fotherby (nee Marsden), who was one of Wimmera Marsden's sisters, the other being Jane Marsden.

Jane never married but had a son Frank in 1923, who lives in Denton. Jane died in 1977.

My Grandmother Lilian had 3 daughters, my mum Marjorie, then Joan and Dorothy.

So my mum is 'WasMarsdennowProcter' dad's cousin. (She is in fact going to see him in the next couple of weeks). She remembers Wimmera Marsden affectionally as 'Uncle Wim'.

Anyway to get back to Samuel Wimmera Marsden, he is buried with his wife Eleanor in St Paul's church Stalybridge in the same grave as my mum's sister (Dorothy Fotherby) and my mum's nephew Nigel Clark. Also buried in the same churchyard is the child that Wimmera & Alice lost - Geoffrey.

My mum does have some photos of Samuel Wimmera and Eleanor.

Hope that all makes sense.

I sent 'WasMarsdennowProcter' a couple of emails about this but I don't think she got them because I got no response.

I went and checked my information and, based on what she said, I have edited what I have for Samuel to reflect the name Wimmera because after looking at the original records and cross referencing some things she is absolutely right.

Thanks for the additional information. If you or 'WasMarsdennowProcter' would like to help me complete your branch of the family in the "Restricted" area, (the area that is not public because it contains information regarding people that are still alive), then please feel free to give me a shout and I'll give you both access to those forums and we can "fill in all those blanks".

Default Whoops!

Hi Adrian,

My dad's just called me as Sally's mum is round at his! Small world. I apologise for not returning your emails, I have just found them in my spam filter (?) Anyways, it appears my dad is putting together the family lineage now and I imagine Sally (hi Sally) will be feeding that back to you.

I still wish my middle name was Wimmera.

Legally, you can change your name to almost anything you want... Since you're clearly directly descended from one whose middle name is Wimmera I'd ask his permission, (assuming he's still alive), and do it if I were you. In many ways it's such a "little thing" but it's also quite a big thing, (well, it is in my eyes - you are carrying on history).

If you'd like I'll add yourself and Sally to the "Restricted" group which will let you see the "less public" area and help me fill in the stuff since the 1901 census.
